Community update

December 6 is National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

29 Nov 2024
Join us for a vigil of honour and reflection at Owens Art Gallery

As we approach the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, all community members are invited to join the vigil on Friday, December 6 in honour of the 14 women who were murdered at École Polytechnique in 1989. This day is a time to remember all victims of gender-based violence and reaffirm our commitment to fight the hatred that led to this tragedy and the misogyny that still exists today.

The vigil will take place at the Owens Art Gallery from 12:30–1:30 p.m. and include poetry readings, speakers, and a moment for reflection. All members of the 69³ÉÈ˵çÓ°Íø community are invited and encouraged to attend.

The names of the victims will be read during the vigil to honour their memory:

  • Geneviève Bergeron
  • Hélène Colgan
  • Nathalie Croteau
  • Barbara Daigneault
  • Anne-Marie Edward
  • Maud Haviernick
  • Maryse Laganière
  • Maryse Leclair
  • Anne-Marie Lemay
  • Sonia Pelletier
  • Michèle Richard
  • Annie St-Arneault
  • Annie Turcotte
  • Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz

The flags on campus will also be lowered to half-mast on December 6.

You are also welcome to participate in a collaborative art piece titled Collective Reflections and Actions, where you can share your reflections, hopes, and actions. This display will be brought to the library following the event for further community engagement.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend this meaningful event or take some time for your own reflection and remembrance on Friday, December 6.
